ZAMEC TO BE LAUNCHED BEFORE YEAR END – SIKAZWE

The Media Liaison Committee (MLC) says it is ready to launch the Zambia Media Council (ZAMEC) by the end of this year.
Committee Spokesperson, Daniel Sikazwe says preparations towards the launch of the media body have advanced while the launch is expected to take place by the end of December.
Mr. Sikazwe said the new Patriotic Front (PF) government has had no objections with MLC’s plans to launch the media body adding that this was confirmed by Information Broadcasting and Tourism who recently gave them a green light to launch the body.
Mr. Sikazwe said the committee was now working on modalities to establish structures for the National Governing Council which will be the secretariat for the media body.
He added that once established, the committee will then go ahead into launching the long awaited ZAMEC.
Mr. Sikazwe, who is also Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA)-Zambia Chairperson, said this in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today.
He said the committee was currently looking at other fundraising ventures to raise funds for the operationalisation of the national governing council.
Mr. Sikazwe said the funds will be raised from among the media bodies while some will come from support from external partners such as Civil Society Organization and the international community.
He also stated that the committee also wanted government to bring the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) amendment Act, the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Act and table the Freedom of Information Bill in parliament.
The launch of ZAMEC had faced serious setbacks after the committee failed to reach a compromise with the then MMD government.
