Idasa, an African democracy
institute, has express its condolences to the people and government of Malawi
on the demise of late president Bingu wa Mutarika. President Wa Mutarika died
on April 6.
In a statement, Idasa stated that though the end of President Wa Mutarika’s presidency was mired in controversy he had unquestionably contributed to the development of Malawi.
“His contributions to agricultural self-reliance are noteworthy. Idasa would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the citizens and political leaders of Malawi for the smooth transition of power to then vice-President, Joyce Banda, despite attempts to derail her appointment,” read a statement in part. “Through this process Malawi has evidenced a strong commitment to constitutionalism and has shown the continent that constitutionally arranged handovers of power do not need to be occasions for conflict or power struggles. It is an adherence to democratic principle for which Malawi should be applauded.
Idasa congratulated President Joyce Banda on her appointment as President of Malawi.
“We welcome her as the first female Head of State within SADC and the second woman President on the African continent and are encouraged by the actions of her first days in office,” read a statement.
Idasa is an independent public interest organisation committed to building sustainable democratic societies in collaboration with African and global partners.
